Dear Employment Applicant to Givens Estates:

We are providing notification to you that on February 14, 2007, Givens Estates will become a tobacco-free employer. This announcement may come as a surprise to some, but if you are keeping up with what is going on around the country, you know that businesses, school systems, hospitals, restaurants, and other organizations are becoming tobacco-free at a rapid pace.  We are joining with these organizations for several reasons including our inability to control second hand cigarette smoke in and around buildings, residents, staff, and guests; as a health care provider, we promote healthy choices; this decision is in accord with our mission and health philosophy.  We encourage individuals to adopt a healthy and balanced lifestyle, and believe that promoting a tobacco-free environment for our residents and staff is the right thing to do.

Givens Estates is committed to assisting staff during this transition.  If you are a smoker, you will either: (1) want to quit, or (2) not want to quit.  No matter which group you find yourself in, please know that you will not be alone.  During the coming months, we will be working with staff interested in our support to become smoke-free.  Staff assistance will include involvement by trained professionals through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), cessation classes, and prescription-plan coverage to include cessation medications and aides, behavior modification, focus group discussions, and more.  Our Life-Spirit team will also be considering additional ways we can support our colleagues during this transition.  This assistance may also be made available to members of your household who use tobacco products as well.

The Givens Health Center and Wood Assisted Living have been smoke-free for some time now for residents.  We recently informed our residents that Asbury and Oxford Commons will become smoke-free effective immediately.

Sincerely,  Amy A. Staton, PHR  HR Director
