Opportunities
to Strengthen Our Community Through Giving
As part of our ongoing effort to improve the quality of life for residents,
Givens Estates seeks and welcomes financial support for various needed
programs and campus facilities. A number of giving opportunities are
available that will help strengthen our ministry:
Givens Estates Chapel - A special effort is underway to further enhance original chapel plans outlined in the A Place for Life Campaign. The proposed renovation to existing space in Asbury Commons will almost triple current seating capacity. Providing for the spiritual needs of our residents has always been a priority of our community. The new location would make the chapel highly accessible to essentially everyone, and is centralized on our campus. Charitable support is critical to the success of this endeavor. Naming recognition opportunities are available. A PDF version of the chapel campaign is available by visiting, Givens Estates Chapel and Fellowship Hall. (Campaign Gift/Pledge Form)
A Place for Life Campaign – Givens Estates
seeks to raise charitable capital to strengthen its mission of serving
seniors from all walks of life. The “A Place for Life” Campaign will help us with our expansion and other needed programs
and projects. Among the projects to be supported by this campaign
are a state-of-the-art wellness / therapy complex and enhanced community
spaces. These areas are a part of our expansion and will include many
new additions to our community such as: heated pool with water-therapy
area, whirlpool, exercise room with senior-friendly equipment, aerobics
room, increased activity spaces, dedicated chapel and large multi-purpose
auditorium. Click here for Campaign booklet.
Givens Estates’ Financial Assistance Ministry: More than one out of four residents receives financial assistance
to help them through such difficult situations as paying for health
expenses not covered by other means. Due to increased life expectancies,
some are challenged with inadequate financial resources. The Financial
Assistance Ministry helps in a confidential manner by providing
nourishing meals, groceries, needed health and dental care, monthly
living assistance, transportation, and more. Their quality of life
is enhanced and the community as a whole is greatly enriched. This
ministry is strengthened by gifts from several sources:
- Mother’s
Day Offering — Givens is supported by the 260+
United Methodist Churches in the Asheville, Marion, and Waynesville
Districts of the Western North Carolina Annual Conference, United
Methodist Church. Most of these churches collect an offering for
the benefit of Givens’ Financial Assistance Ministry.
- "A Gift of Care" — A specially designed Givens Estates Christmas
Ornament is sent to each contributor and for those donations in
honor or memory of a friend or loved one. An ornament may also
be sent indicating a special gift of tribute.
- Memorials
— Gifts made in memory of a loved one or friend are often
directed to our Financial Assistance Ministry as well as other
areas as requested by the donor.
- Joy
Fund — Gifts made to this special fund help with
the smaller, yet equally important needs of our residents. Gifts
may help provide comfortable clothing such as a sweater or slippers;
enhance a resident’s life through classes, special event
outings and programs; or provide holiday or birthday gifts, especially
when a resident has little or no family.
- Endowment
Fund — The income from our Financial Assistance
Endowment Fund is directed toward helping residents with limited
resources. Some individuals and families have established Named
Endowments to benefit this ministry. Gifts to these funds are
recognized annually.
- Bequests
— Gifts made through estate plans may also be directed to
our Financial Assistance Ministry.
Capital
or Facility Improvements: Quality of life is improved through
additions or renovations to our campus. For example, our Mershon Garden,
a beautiful rock garden and viewing benches just outside of Asbury
Hall, was given by late resident, Mrs. Lois P. Mershon, in memory
of her husband, Richard E. Mershon. Other facility improvement gifts
include the automatic doors into Asbury Hall, given by Ed and Donna
Broadwell and the K.W. and Wilma E. Partin Arboretum, a gift of three
generations of the K.W. Partin Family, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Partin
on the occasion of K.W.'s 100th birthday.
Endowments — Givens Estates’ Long Range
Plan called for Endowments to reach $2.2 million by the end of the
year 2000; however, this amount will need to be doubled within the
next decade. A majority of the earnings from our endowments are directed
toward the Financial Assistance Ministry; we are most appreciative
of the many friends of Givens who help to keep this fund growing for
the benefit of our residents.
Customized Giving — There are many ways to
give to Givens to help make life more comfortable for our residents.
One of those methods is through customized, or planned giving, which
can provide the donor with tax favorable benefits. The benefits can
include increased income, tax deductions, partial or full bypass of
potential capital gains on appreciated property. Givens Estates is
familiar with Bequests, Charitable Remainder Trusts, Charitable Gift
Annuities, Gifts of Real and Personal Property, Life Estates, Life
Insurance, and for residents, Life Use Fee Assignments.
The Givens Estates Heritage Society — We recognize
those individuals who advise us that Givens Estates has been included
in their estate plans. This Society honors the tireless efforts of
individuals to support the vision of Mrs. Maurice H. Givens, who made
a gift of her estate to create the ecumenical and inclusive retirement
community which Givens Estates has grown to be and for which we are
most grateful.
Membership in this society is granted simply by your notification
that we are included in your giving plans - wills, life insurance,
charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, resident life use fee
assignments, etc.
