Givens
Estates longtime dream of establishing ministries on its campus and
beyond to serve the aging in Western North Carolina has become a reality.
Through joint efforts with the Asheville District, United Methodist
Conference and Community CarePartners, Givens Estates has extended
our services to older adults beyond our campus and has joined in promoting
wellness among people of all ages. Through the many Opportunities
for Giving, over $2 million has been committed to our outreach
ministries from charitable sources and grants.
Some of our Outreach Projects include: The Vanderbilt Apartments,
LifeMinistries and the Memory Assessment Clinic.
The Vanderbilt
Apartments is a HUD-subsidized apartment building in downtown Asheville.
The Resident Services Program assists many lower-income adults in
dealing with life’s changes caused by advancing years. Many
of the residents need some level of help in order to continue living
independently. Some are frail, and for them, day-to-day assistance
is especially crucial. Givens provides key leadership in creating
and maintaining this innovative program which serves 150 elderly adults.
Results show that this project is filling a void in their care, enhancing
their quality of life and providing them with a greater sense of community.
For additional information on The Vanderbilt Apartments contact Portia Gough, Resident Services Coordinator, at 828-253-8024 or email pgough@thevanderbilt.org.
LifeMinistries is partially modeled after the parish
nursing ministries concept and was formed through the merger of two
outreach projects sponsored by Givens Estates and the United Methodist
Church – Asheville District. Judy Durham, RN, is the LifeMinistries
Director and a commissioned parish nurse. The purpose of this ministry
is to provide care and support for those living in rural communities
beyond Givens Estates.
The objectives of this ministry include identifying a congregation’s
health needs, designing ministries to meet those needs and helping
people access local health resources. The program assists churches
of all denominations by providing training for staff and volunteers
in working with appropriate resources to help members of their congregations
and communities live abundant lives, remain independent, access services
and maintain healthy lifestyles.
Medication assistance programs have been developed through this ministry
for people with limited finances who are faced with choosing between
paying for food and utilities in lieu of medications. With locations
in three areas of the region, the medication assistance program helps
members of the following communities: Enka/Candler through Francis
Asbury Church, East Asheville through Oakley Baptist Church and Spruce
Pine/Burnsville through MY (Mitchell-Yancey) Meds. The LifeMinistries
outreach effort served more than 6,000 people over the past several
years and has provided over $4.1 million in free medications. For
more information on LifeMinistries contact Judy Durham at 828-230-1071.
The Memory Assessment Clinic and Elder Care Resource Center
is a separate not-for-profit corporation located in Asbury Hall on
the Givens Estates campus. The clinic is headed by Peggy Noel, MD,
a nationally known physician specializing in elder care. The clinic
helps diagnose individuals struggling with memory disorders and provides
needed education for the caregiver. This is the only such facility
in Western North Carolina. For additional information on MAC visit
their website at: www.memorycare.org
