Dear Friends,

The COVID-19 trends in Buncombe County as of this week are favorable:

  • There are 83 new cases per 100,000 per week, down from 97 per 100,000 two weeks ago.
  • The percent positivity is 3.6 percent, down from the 4-4.5 percent range of the last several weeks.
  • Regional hospitalizations continue to remain low and stable.
  • Buncombe County vaccination statistics indicate that close to 47 percent of the eligible adult population (121,346 individuals) has been vaccinated with at least one dose and 40.5 percent of population is fully vaccinated.

Currently Givens Estates has no residents and three team members ill with the virus. There are four individuals in quarantine due to direct exposure to someone positive with the virus. Fortunately, more than 98% of residents and 70% of team members are fully vaccinated. Our most recent COVID-19 testing of residents and team members working in GEHC and WAL resulted in no individuals testing positive. We continue to monitor conditions on campus closely as restrictions are eased and will respond as conditions change.

Givens Estates continues to follow all CDC guidance and Governor Cooper’s Executive Orders to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please adhere to the 3 W’s including maintaining 6 feet distance from others and the wearing of masks when indoors in public and not seated in dining. The wearing of masks when outdoors in no longer required. The maximum indoor group size increases to 100 people with the wearing of masks and physical distancing. Although indoor group size has increased, to account for physical distancing, most of our rooms cannot accommodate 100 attendees until the physical distancing requirement is no longer required.

I want to share with you several Givens Estates leadership changes resulting from Robin Suddreth’s retirement as Health Services Director in April. David Moore has assumed the position of interim Health Services Director with responsibility for Givens Estates Health Center, Wood Assisted Living and Home Care services. We have begun a search for an Associate Director for Givens Estates that will support the ongoing day to day operations of the community. We are working to identify qualified candidates for Associate Director over the coming weeks and will keep you informed of our progress.

I am also pleased to share with you a new informational brochure for Givens Communities that provides an overview of our mission and vision as well as highlights of each campus and our outreach. We developed this overview to provide a summary of the options available through Givens Communities for individuals in the Asheville Community and beyond that are not familiar with Givens. You can view the brochure by visiting brochure.givenscommunities.org .

I am grateful for the many contributions made by our dedicated team members and residents as we get back to a more normal routine. Please continue to be hold one another up in a positive, affirming manner as we reopen and roll out new offerings in Dining and Wellness. Thank you for your continued support and patience.

With gratitude,

John C. Cowan, Jr.

Executive Director
