Community engagement through volunteering and outreach, both on campus and in the Asheville community at large, is an important part of the wellness culture at Givens Estates. Our Volunteer Partner Agency Board (VPAB) makes it easy for residents to make a difference for someone in need. VPAB partners with five local organizations to aid them in their mission to serve. Residents volunteer over 11,000 hours annually to Mission Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, MANNA Food Bank, The NC Arboretum, and Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM).

Research demonstrates that volunteering leads to better health and that older volunteers are the most likely to receive physical, mental, and spiritual health benefits from volunteer activities.

Sample Volunteer opportunities include:
  • Knit scarves and hats for Veteran’s Restoration Quarters, Steadfast House residents, newborns, and cancer patients
  • Sew stuffed animals for children in Steadfast House and Mission Hospital
  • Prepare and serve lunch for the Veteran’s Restoration Quarters residents
  • Assemble gift bags for the local jail inmates
  • Assemble mailings for Habitat for Humanity
  • Assemble MANNA packs for local children for weekend meals
  • Trail work and information desk at the NC Arboretum
